These pickups are done in consultation with the WRFL operations team, once they have assessed the frequency rate in which your I Recycle Hub setup gets full. The pickups are to ensure there is no overspill and the image of the setup is maintained. The cost of pick-up is subject to the number of bags picked up and the frequency of the pick-up.
2. Sorting
All Recyclables are then transported back to WRFL’s Lautoka and Lami yards where they are then sorted, cleaned, and compacted before they are shipped to our overseas partners for recycling.
3. Training
Pacific Recycling Foundation, an offshoot of Waste Recyclers Fiji Limited recognizes that one of the key challenges faced by the recycling industry is the lack of active participation by individuals, communities, and business houses. This challenge is because there is limited understanding and knowledge about recycling and the Collection Pillars of Recycling (CPR). Similar to the I Recycle Hub concept, the PRF training program has been developed in-house and is based on experiences and years of engagement in the recycling space. The training program ranges from understanding the history of recycling and its inception in the Pacific to topics of being able to secernate those who call themselves “recycling” companies, to understanding why it is important to have local involvement in the space and to protect the vulnerability of CPR who play an important role in the whole recycling ecosystem. PRF also acknowledges that any training in this area will always be in development stages and is never constant or final, this is based on the understanding that technology continues to advance, and more and more products are being developed which ultimately become a new line of recyclable or rubbish, new ways of recycling are being thought of trialed and introduced into society, etc, therefore PRF training manual guide will always be in a state of a living document.
4. Data & Monitoring
The PRF’s key area of focus deals with changing the mindset and behaviour of our communities on the best practices of recycling through tailor-made programs as well as implementing waste management and recycling programs that have a monitoring and evaluation framework which collects data, provides feedback and records lessons learned. This will contribute to the development of a core blueprint for other recycling projects in the region.
